Zenfone 3 Laser (ZC551KL) Review

ASUS, last year launched Zenfone 3 Laser (ZC551KL) with some great hardware and software combination. We also got a device for review so we can know more about it deeply. In this review we focused on Built and Design , Display and Performance ,Benchmark,Gaming ,Battery Life and Camera Performance.

Build And Design
Asus has made it clear that it no longer wants to fight it out in the budget smartphone market where competition has been fierce lately. The Zenfone Laser sports full metal body with 2.5D

Corning Gorilla Glass in front for some extra protection with style. Volume rockers and power button is right side as usual and hybrid sim tray

(Micro-SIM/Nano-SIM) means you can only use 2 sims together or 1 sim and SDcard. Company claims that both sim slot support 2G/3G/4G and in our testing the both sim perfectly working on even 4G network so you don't have take out sim and switch.

3.5mm jack is on the top left corner and mic, speaker grill, usb charging jack is on downside.

Despite featuring a 5.5-inch screen , the ZenFone 3 Laser easily fits in one hand but sometimes you have to use your both hands.

The handset sports 77 percent screen-to-body ratio. There are capacitive Android navigation buttons below the display. As the navigation buttons are not backlit, it's really hard to use these buttons in dark.

Display
The smartphone have an 5.5 inch (1080x1920) display with 2.D curved glass which looks really well as compared to previous Zenfone's. The device have a Full HD display which works really great in indoor and outdoor even we didn't face any problem while watching movies and playing games at any angle.

Performance
Zenfone 3 Laser is powered by a 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor along with 4gb of ram which enough for a normal and high end user if you are a normal user. Out of 4GB you will get around 2 GB free ram to use. 32GB of internal storage make this smartphone more useful. 23.89GB of memory are free to use and rest is occupied by Android OS and Zen-UI bloatware apps.

Benchmark
Antutu Benchmark Score - The Snapdragon 430 and Adreno 505 managed to get nearly 42,600 score on the Antutu benchmark which shows that this smartphone is enough powerful.

Geekbench 4 Score - The Asus Zenfone 3 Laser scored 641 on single core and scored 2030 on multi-core.

Quadrant and 3Dmark
- The score on Quadrant was 22095 and finally, the score on the 3D mark (Slingshot extreme) was 293.

Internal Storage Benchmark - Reading Speed 140.22 MB/s , Writing Speed is 146.69 MB/s

Gaming
The Zenfone Laser have a enough powerful processor and ram along with Adreno 505 GPU to handle some heavy games. We also tested some heavy games like Asphalt 8 Xtreme and Modern Combat 5, Dead Trigger And Modern Strike. The Asphalt 8 Xtreme, Modern Strike runs quite smoothly without any frame drops or lag but in Modern Combat 5 and Dead Trigger, we faced little lag and some frame drops.

Battery Performance And Charging
Talking about battery, this device have a decent 3000mAh battery which gives you decent backup. If you use your device normally like playing movies, music and some other office work, this device will run whole day and a half day but in heavy usage it will run just half day which is a drawback of this device.

In terms of charging. there is no quick charge feature so it takes 2 to 3 hours to get fully charged.

Camera Performance

Asus Zenfone 3 Laser (ZC551KL) sports a 13 Megapixel PixelMaster Rear camera with f/2.0 aperture, Laser Autofocus, Dual LED (Dual-tone) Flash and capable to record Full HD 1080p videos at 30fps. The front camera is an 8 Megapixel camera with f/2.0 aperture. The camera of Zenfone 3 Laser comes with a Video stabilization mode which when enabled, helps in stabilizing the video. The most hyped features of this phone is its laser autofocus technology which claims to locks focus in just 0.03 seconds. During our review, we found that this feature really did work pretty fast. The laser autofocus plays a major role when taking close-up shots

The camera interface is same as other Asus Zenfone 3 series smartphones.

The Top section contains Settings, HDR toggle, Camera Switcher and Flash toggle. The bottom section contains Modes, Video Recording Button, Shutter Key, Manual Mode Toggle and Gallery shortcut.

Asus Camera Modes And Uses
Auto Mode: This mode automatically chooses best settings according to your surroundings & lighting conditions.

Manual Mode: In this mode you can adjust all settings like ISO, Focus, White balance, Exposure, Shutter Speed etc.

Super Resolution Mode: This mode takes multiple images and stitches them together to form a large 65 Megapixel photo.

Low Light: As the name states, the low light mode helps you take better pictures in low lighting conditions.

Other modes include; HDR Pro, Beautification, Selfie Mode, QR Code, Night Mode, Effect, Panorama, Children, Time Rewind, All Smiles, ZenFlash, Gif Animation, Miniature, Slow Motion and Time Lapse Mode.

Image And Video Quality
Asus Zenfone 3 Laser ZC551KL comes with a very amazing camera for a phone in this price segment. The camera is quite good, the images produced by it are so sharp and detailed, even i can’t believe it was taken by a mid-range smartphone camera. The color reproduction and contrast is quite accurate. The camera performs really well in daylight. The results in artificial light are also good. When it comes to Low light photography, you get two different modes; Low Light Mode & Night Mode. There are confusion between these two modes, but i tell you that the Low light mode is for low light conditions and the Night mode is for shooting outdoors at Night, I’ve tried both modes and you can see the results below.

The Night mode combines multiple images to create one with less noise, while the Low light mode brightens up the image. Both modes works great in this price segment.

Connectivity

The device supports 2G/3G/4G, VoLTE, Bluetooth v4.2 with A2DP, EDR & LE, GPS with A-GPS, GLONASS & BDS support, MicroUSB connector, OTG support, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct as well as Hotspot.

Fingerprint

The Fingerprint sensor is placed on back side of this device below the camera which performs really fast in unlocking the phone, Other features of fingerprint is double tap to launch camera and answer incoming calls. You can also take pictures and selfies by the help of fingerprint sensor.

Sound Quality
Zenfone 3 Laser speaker is placed next to the charging port, so it worked well no matter the phone was placed facing down or up. The speaker was good but not loud enough to enjoy music. The speaker is only made for casual music listening or for speaker calls but you'll need to keep the phone closer to hear the voice from the other end. From my point of view the loudspeaker was average, but when we plug in the earphones, the performance delivered by Zenfone 3 Laser is above average. Asus Zenfone 3 Laser comes bundled with a pair of earphones, unlike Asus Zenfone 3 Max.

Pros of Zenfone 3 Laser
  • Good design and build quality
  • Good display panel quality
  • Good Camera with many modes and fast laser autofocus
  • Fast Unlocking
Cons of Zenfone 3 Laser
  • Average battery life and charging
  • Gets heat up while using camera
  • Average Performance
  • Little Overpriced
