Asus Zenfone Live ( ZB501KL) Full Review

Approx a month ago ASUS has launched ASUS Zenfone Live with a Beauty Live App feature that ASUS claim to be the world’s first live streaming beautification technology, available in any Smartphone. Recently, we have got a device for review so that we can share our experiences about this with our viewers. In this review we focused on, Built and Design , Display and Performance , Benchmark, Gaming, Battery Life and Camera performance and the most touting feature of this smartphone Beautify Video during live streaming.

Design & Display
Since leaving the design with the curvature on the back, Asus mobile phone looks like most mobile phones with curves are plural on each side. Where other manufacturer are moving towards metal, ASUS decided to go with plastic body but I have no issue with this as the device is very light weight and easy to hold. This device has a metal-like coating on the back and with the rounded edge it looks good in hand. With a thickness of 7.95mm and weighs of 120 grams, the first impression when grasping it, the phone is quite light and slim. No wonder many think this phone is specific to "chick" or teenagers. At the front, the phone has curved 2.5D glass, but there is no information about the protective layer for the screen.

Under the front screen, the phone adopts 3 buttons used for back, home and recent app without consisting of LEDs instead of on screen button. Having captive button is not a issue but I am missing backlit . The front camera and Selfie LED flash are separated by the speaker holes. The power button is on the right side along with the volume button, the awesome design help you easily distinguish between the two. While the audio jack is located on the top side along with secondary microphone. The bottom edge houses the Micro-USB port, a single speaker grill, and a microphone port & on the left there is a SIMcard tray. The ZenFone Live doesn't offers fingerprint sensor and at this price this is really not appreciable.
The Zenfone Live sports a 5-inch 720p HD display along with 2.5D glass that curves at the edges. The color reproduction is good enough and the display is visible under direct sunlight. The auto brightness works fine, and it’s not very aggressive. There is also a blue light filter so that you can read or browse without straining your eyes.

Asus ZenFone Live specifications
Asus has hidden the model number of this phone's processor and has not mentioned it anywhere, even on the website it has only mentioned that Qualcomm Snapdragon quad-core processor. But after carefully analyzing, I found that ZenFone Live is powered by Snapdragon 400 processor, which is a very old processor and was launched in 2013. The processor is clocked at 1.4GHz and there is 2GB of RAM onboard on which approx 994MB is free.

ZenFone Live comes with 16GB native storage out of which around 10GB is available to the user. Storage is expandable up to 256GB via a microSD card but sim slot is hybrid you can use either 2 sim cards or 1 sim card and microSD card. The battery is non removable and is rated at 2650mAh. In the Sale box a SIM ejector tool, a USB cable and a 5.2W charger is available

The ZenFone Live sports a 13-megapixel camera on rear side with LED flash. It also houses a 5-megapixel front facing camera with a selfie flash. The camera app is as good and very easy to use it also offers lots of options to choose from.

We found that, In day light conditions the phone focused quickly and snap a good quality pictures.
But in low light, the camera little struggle to focus and took little more time also the output was dull and little grainy but thanks to Beautification technology you will receive some good result. There is the option to switch on low-light mode which bumps the ISO up and lowers the shutter speed. Also, in this mode, the resolution of the photo is restricted to 3-megapixel but the picture quality we clicked in this mode is somewhat acceptable. However, in terms of video, the camera is capable of recording at 1080p. Beautification mode is also available when recording video.

Low Light Click

The 5-megapixel selfie camera on the ZenFone Live has 1.4-micron pixels size and a selfie flash, both are in favor of best result in low light conditions but in reality in low light we saw grains on the image which is not good, but in Beautification mode we got good result even in low light. Beautification mode is switched on by default and it does some work for you [see sample].   The front facing camera can record at 720p.

Beauty Live App
The ZenFone Live currently supports live beautification for streaming to Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram. The beautification mode shows a dial from zero to ten which lets you adjust the level of beautification. Live Beautification works for both the rear and front cameras, but the beautification mode is well optimized and isn’t aggressive

Similar to the Company Claim, I found the best results during live streaming as well as images clicked via Beauty Life App. In day light condition beautification feature works best at all three platforms Youtube, Facebook and Instagram . In low light condition the results are acceptable, You can share the Video to your social platform without hesitation. The beautification mode does works best with camera mode too and I received the similar results as with live streaming.

The Zenfone Live is powered by a Old processor and 2 GB RAM so naturally the performance suffers if you install large no of app or play heavy games. But for normal user I found it satisfactory. I did gaming on it, and I played light games like Sniper 3D, Temple Jungle Run, Temple Run, and Breakneck all runs fine except Breakneck for me without any lag. Breakneck takes little more time to start and sometime it hangs but once start i manage to play it easily.  The 2650 mAH battery last long for nearly a day but if you play games it washed off quickly.

It runs on Android Marshmallow operating system with ZenUI skin on the top. Asus uses a lighter theme and bigger icons for the quick toggles that feel me comfortable to use.  Capturing a screenshot is quite easy in this phone just tap and hold on the recent app capacitive icon to capture a screenshot. Torch is also very bright it fills whole 13*12 room with light, there is an option to switch on on screen light too. The Asus ZenFone Live managed to run all the games but battery drains quick in case of heavy games. So if love heavy gaming or found of heavy 4G usage than this 2650mAh battery won't keep you interested in the phone for long.

ZenFone Live has support for 4G VoLTE on both SIM slots but only one can run on to 4G at a time while the other is restricted to 2G connectivity.

Few Good features are screenshot using recent app button, and UI gestures like double tap to off the screen, Dark screen gestures like draw C to launch rear camera, draw S to launch front camera etc. You can event set which apps you would like to open on specific gesture.

I used Geekbench 4 benchmark and below is the result I received.
The numbers are not good enough but what more I can expect from a 4 year old processor.

Company claims that the Asus ZenFone Live equipped with a world's first live streaming beautification features and it somewhat deliver, what the ASUS claims. If you are a normal user and loves this features than you can buy this smartphone on the cost of outdated processor and no fingerprint sensor

Zenfone live is packed with a many user friendly features but still processor is questionable. Price of the Asus Zenfone live is Rs 9,999 and this budget section is hot among many brands , if you are a normal user and love the live beautification feature than this is the right phone for you but if you are a gamer or heavy 4G user and want a phone that can stay day long with you and your budget is under 10,000 than you can go for Redmi 4, Moto G5 or you can choice Redmi 3S prime too that offer relatively good specification and surely stands value for money
